Please note that this list is a general guide and not meant to be exact. There is some dispute regarding the dates on some serial numbers and your gun may actually be a year off from what is listed. The precise shipping date as "lettered" can be several years off depending on model. The book shows serial numbers for the 34 as 11000 in 1955 and 52673 in 1959. Since S&W began stamping model numbers in 1957 your 34 would likely be ~1958. As far as the 34-1, it shows serial number 135464 in 1969 with the serial numbers transitioning to M prefix (starting with M1) that same year..22 Ladysmith 2nd Model. Serial numbers ran from 4576 in 1906 to 13950 in 1910..38 Safety Hammerless 5th Model. Serial numbers ran from 220000 in 1907 to 261493 in 1940. Modern .38 S&W ammo is safe to use. Nickle plated 357mag 3.5 inch pinned barrel, square butt, wood inset grips, serial as follows S 123XXX Smith & Wesson used overlapping serial number ranges until the 1950’s and 1960’s, when serial numbers started to include letters. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that serial numbers became unique across the entire company. To correctly identify your firearm, the best source of information is the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson. The "alphanumeric" - letters followed by numbers - serial numbers began in 1980. The S&W L frames, your Mod 586, were the first S&W's produced with this type of serial number. Yours then was produced in 1980-81 with some of that serial number as late as Oct of 1982. It's is very nice 357, one of the first ones too. My research would indicate the "S" prefix series of the K Frame Post War M&Ps were started sometime in 1945 or 1946 and ended when the “C” prefix series started in March 1948. The first serial number was S 811,120 and the last was S 999,999.
